About Me

Proudly displaying my “libraries gave us power” tattoo. In my spare time, I’m also a trustee of my local library in Walkley, Sheffield.

I am the author of two published novels, Outside Inside and Distortion, and I’m currently editing my third novel. I also write poetry and enjoy taking part in spoken word events and poetry slams. I am an active member of the creative writing community in Sheffield, organising spoken word events and workshops as part of The Writers Workshop.

I am an experienced writer and editor who loves to help people to tell their stories. Since 2013, I have helped many writers to realise their dreams: giving their books the polish and shine they need to get them to a professional standard.

I specialise in guiding independent authors through the maze of self-publishing. Whether you choose Amazon, Lulu, Smashwords or an independent printer, I can help you to become the author of a book that people all over the world can buy and read, and help you to earn royalty payments on your writing.

I am passionate about memoir. I believe that everyone should be able to express themselves, write about their lives and capture their memories. Memoir can take many forms, and if you have written a book-length memoir, I can help you to publish it and share it with the world. I am experienced in working with people with dementia to capture their stories, working with hospital and care home patients to create the books Dales Tales and In Our Day to tell their stories.

I have loved telling and reading stories of all kinds ever since I was a small child. I truly believe that stories are the best way that we communicate with each other. I am a graduate of English Literature at the University of Sheffield and have an MA in Writing from Sheffield Hallam University, as well as holding a PGCE in English teaching.

I live in Sheffield, a city which constantly inspires me. When I’m not writing, I love walking, cooking (I’m vegan and I love cooking and eating vegan food), going to a wide range of arts and performance events and working at and enjoying festivals of all kinds.

  1. I don’t remember you (I must have been in the year above) but thanks for the shared memories of Portway Junior school. Spot on. Mrs Shaw – I’d be surprised if anyone had any fond memories of that woman. Enough to give you nightmares.

  2. She encouraged us with all that drama and poetry, but she was pretty terrifying! And very snobby. The prefects all came from the posher parts of Allestree* and one of their perks was to give her King Charles Spaniel a walk at lunchtime! Most of those prefects were terrible bullies. She was a strange woman and probably gave many children some very odd ideas about the world.
And as for the school uniform. I still feel sorry for the boys having to wear shorts, even in winter!
*There isn’t really a “rough” end of Allestree, but I lived on Elm Grove which is officially a council estate.

    • I left Portway in 1972 but I certainly remember Mrs Shaw, quite a character. I don’t remember any prefects in the Junior School

      • This is mad, all the time we’ve known each other and I didn’t know you were at Portway!!! Presumably as a teacher! I was there from 1986-1988 but it left quite an impression and the ability to use a fountain pen and to project my voice!! As well as much confusion about class and identity.
